* Notes: Onslow var adelig, velhavende og sønnesøn af den første grve af Onslow. Hans far, Edward Onslow , MP måtte i 1781 forlade United Kingdom efter en homosexuel skandale, giftede sig fransk og grundlagde dermed den franske gren af familien. To af sønnerne gjorde sig gældende som kunstnere, den ygre som maler og Geor- ge O. som komponist. I 1807 udkommer (for egen regning) hans første opus, - 3 strygekvintetter. De er helt i overensstemmelse med de Haydn'ske principper, og da han selv føler behov for for- nyelse, tager han lektioner hos Antonin Reicha, og fortsætter iøvrigt sin produktion. Onslow skriver, udover operaer og symfonier hele 35 String Quartetter og 34 -kvin- tetter samt anden kammermusik. Kompositionerne bliver godt modtaget og O. får international hæder og anerkendelse. Det er bemærkelsesværdigt, at kvintet- terne er skrevet ud med to celloer i stedet for de traditionelle 2 bratcher..
